Receiving injectable treatment always comes with the risk of potential bruising around the treated area. However, there are a few ways that you can mitigate some of the bruising and it all starts before you even receive a treatment. Prior to your injection, here are a few things to do or avoid:
- Avoid medications and supplements that can increase bruising 1-2 weeks prior to treatment. These include aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Ibuprofen, and any other anti-inflammatory drug. It can also include any supplements such as Fish Oil, Flaxseed Oil, St John’s Wort, garlic, ginseng or anything that thins the blood. Telling your injector every possible medication and/or supplement you are on is critical and they can advise you on which ones you should definitely stay away from before your treatment.
- Do NOT consume alcohol for at least 24 hours before treatment. Alcohol thins the blood and will promote bruising.
- Talk to your injector about any cold sores or rashes that you have had near the treatment area. These are all important aspects your injector needs to know about to ensure you receive the best treatment.
- Start Arnica Montana a day before or the morning of the treatment. Arnica Montana is a natural supplement that helps heal bruises, faster. You may continue taking Arnica for several days post treatment.
If you are on a medication that you simply cannot stop taking, it is important to discuss that with your injector. It is also crucial to talk with your injector about what you can expect post-injection. Even if you take every step prior to the treatment to avoid bruising, your skin is experiencing some trauma and may bruise. These are just some of the tips and tricks to keep in mind prior to the treatment to help mitigate some of the bruising and swelling that comes with an injection.
